Psychiatrists can both prescribe medications and provide therapy to patients. This provides a lot of flexibility in the type of treatments that psychiatrists can offer. Some psychiatrists choose to focus more on one type of treatment as opposed to another - and some geographical areas are more in need of one type of practice compared to the other.

As to who makes more money - I can't really comment. I'm sure there are some psychiatrists who provide mostly talk therapy who make more money than those that mostly do medication management.

In most cases when dealing with insurance companies, I'm guessing that psychiatrists could make more money from brief sessions doing medication management compared to psychotherapy sessions.
