just got married and both my wife and I consolidated our undergrad loans, which got me thinking. Do college loans have any effect on acceptance into medical school. IE do lots of loans make you less competitive? I

As far as I know, personal debt is not a factor in the admissions process. I don't believe it is inquired about anywhere on the applications, and it would only be an issue after you were accepted. Of course, it is important to be aware of the obligations that go with school loans.
