I'm just a freshman in Highschool and I want to aim my goals to be a psychiatrist or a psychologist. I thought it took Psychiatrists.. 4 yrs to become one and 4 more years for a masters. Sites are confusing!! So. is it 8 in total? or less.

Psychiatrist: 4 years for undergraduate college, 4 years for medical school, 4 years for psychiatry residency = 12 years after high school

Psychologist: 4 years of undergraduate college, 4 years to obtain PsyD or PhD, then 1 year of internship = 9 years (I'm not positive about this, as I am not a psychologist). You can also become a master's level psychologist, which take 2 years after undergraduate college. It seems that most clinical psychologists in practice have a PsyD or a PhD, at least from what I've seen.

If you want to read more about the differences between psychologists and psychiatrists you'll want to read this thread.
